Asthma Symptom Prevention Plan
Treating your child’s asthma with a preventive medicine is a good first step toward preventing asthma symptoms. The next important step is to work together with your child’s health care team to develop an individualized asthma symptom prevention plan.
This plan should be custom-tailored to your child and used as a guide for keeping your child’s asthma from flaring up. A good asthma symptom prevention plan should include
- Triggers that affect your child’s asthma the most
- Symptoms to watch for
- What to do when asthma symptoms occur
- Specific asthma medicines and when to take them
- Emergency contact information
A copy of the plan should be given to all close family members, as well as teachers and babysitters.

You should review the plan regularly with your child’s doctor, and be sure to get your child involved as well.
